starting sustainability habits

Plastic pollution and juvenile fish.
Incorporating sustainable practices into your daily life doesn’t have to be overwhelming. The most impactful habits are often the simplest ones that, over time, become second nature.
Here’s how to get started:
  • Start Small: Begin with one easy habit, like carrying a reusable water. It might seem silly, but find one you LOVE. You’ll be more likely to use it.

  • Set Clear Goals: Define simple, achievable goals - such as reducing plastic by 20% this month. Write your goals down and post them on the fridge.

  • Track Progress: Use a habit tracker to stay motivated as you see improvement. Check in with yourself each day to celebrate your sustainability wins, and recognize where there could be improvement. Its a journey - don’t get discouraged!

  • Plan Ahead: Keep a couple reusable bags in your car or commuter bag for those unplanned stops at the store.

  • Batch Tasks: Do laundry in full loads or meal prep to minimize energy and waste.

  • Eco-Friendly Swaps: Slowly swap items with more sustainable options. Check a recent article about this!

  • Create Accountability: Share your goals with a friend, a partner, a sustainability focused Facebook group. If you say your goals out loud, you’re more likely to stick to them!

  • Stay Inspired: Read, watch, or follow sustainability content to understand the impact of your actions.

Sustainable habits grow over time. These habits will start to feel effortless, and you’ll be making a positive impact on the planet. Enjoy the journey - your future self (and the planet) will thank you!

the less obvious outdoor essentials

When we think of heading outdoors, the typical list of essentials pops up: water bottle, good shoes, sunscreen, a backpack. But there are a handful of less obvious items that can make your experience smoother, safer, and more enjoyable.
Here are some of those handy “extras” that can transform a good day outside into a great one:
  1. Duct Tape: Imagine this: you’re miles into your hike, and your shoe or backpack suddenly rips. Having a small roll of duct tape or repair tape in your pack is a lifesaver for these unexpected repairs.

  2. Portable Battery Pack: Choose a lightweight, durable power bank that can fully recharge your phone at least once. You’ll appreciate it if your GPS needs an extra boost or you’re staying out longer than planned.

  3. Lightweight Hammock: For a mid-hike rest or just enjoying the view, a lightweight hammock can’t be beaten. Modern hammocks pack down small and only take minutes to set up.

  4. Electrolyte Tablets: Water alone doesn’t always cut it on a long hike, especially on hot days.

  5. Biodegradable Wet Wipes: A day outdoors can get sweaty and messy, and biodegradable wipes are an eco-friendly way to freshen up.

  6. Small Notebook and Pencil: With all the inspiration that nature provides, having a small notebook lets you capture the experience on paper.

  7. Bandana: Small but mighty, a bandana has countless uses in the outdoors. You can use it to shade your neck from the sun, as a makeshift bandage or sling, or even as a mini towel. It’s versatile and takes up next to no space in your bag.

When it comes to the outdoors, it’s easy to over-pack with gear “just in case.” However, many of these less obvious items are lightweight and compact, meaning they can fit into any pack without weighing you down. Tailor your gear to your destination, weather forecast, and activities, and you’ll find that these extra items make a significant difference. Happy trails!
a few words

one day at a time

Balancing a typical 9-5 job with my goals for sustainability and getting outdoors isn’t always easy, but it’s become a priority that adds so much meaning to my days. Right now, my small, sustainable habits that fit naturally into my life are: always using a reusable water bottle, taking public transit more often, opting for buying in bulk and using refillables vs. single-use plastics. And just as important is my goal to get outside every day, even if just for a quick walk or a moment of fresh air on my porch between tasks. These are simple steps, but each one reminds me of my commitment to both my own well-being and to making a positive impact, little by little.
